Summary: Meet at your hotel in Tirana for a full-day excursion to Berat, one of Albania's most historic, scenic and well-preserved medieval towns.  Berat, ‘the town of a thousand windows’. Nowadays a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berat was spared architectural ‘modernization’ during the communist era and retains its ancient charms. Picturesque white houses sprawl up the hillside higgledy-piggledy towards its remarkable citadel which houses no fewer than 8 medieval churches, including one with a fine collection of icons, the portraits of the saints of the Orthodox Church. There is also an Ethnographic Museum in an 18th century house with displays of furniture, clothing, kitchen equipment and traditional crafts. Enjoy the old architecture of the town, as well as the striking Citadel overlooking the river, and wander over to the old Christian quarter across the river for a visit. Visit Berat's numerous ruined mosques and medieval Orthodox churches or stop in at the Onufri National Museum, located in the inner part of “Saint Mary Church” in Castle of Berat.

Rodoni Cape daytrip / 10.05.2014

Summary: A daytrip from Tirana to stunning cape, an ancient church, and an old fortress - about 100 kilometer roundtrip from Tirana. The road leads through a varied landscape, sometimes remiscent of a coastline in England.

The itinerary goes through the highway until Vora and after through asphalted village roads  to the Cape and back via the Gjiri i Lalzit Beach where you may decide for a bath before turning back towards the Durres-Tirana highway. The entire route is on asphalt until to the proximities of the ancient church of the Cape. From the church, it is possible to walk a hundred meters to the abandoned military base to see the bunkers, before continuing on foot to look at or visit the castle.

Cultural attractions 1: Rodoni Castle is located on Cape of Rodon. After the victorious First Siege of Krujë the League of Lezhë decided to increase the fortifications for use against the Ottoman Empire. Skanderbeg chose the cape of Rodon as the location of the castle and construction began in 1450 and was completed in c. 1452. According to Marin Barleti this castle was destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1467. In 1500 the castle was rebuilt by the Republic of Venice. As a result of the corrosive action of the sea waves, some of the walls are now under the waters of the Adriatic. Today the visitors can see the outer walls on the right side and the tower at the place they intersect.

Cultural attractions 2: Church of St. Anthony was the only object which existed until some years before the state of ruin in Rodoni Cape. During the communist regime this church together with three monasteries in the area were destroyed by numerous army bases that were located here. Church of St. Anthony had a plan 13.6 mx 6.2 m. It consisted of naos, narthex and altar alcove. The facility was built with a pumice stone masonry and brick with lime mortar, using Byzantine techniques. The church belongs to the Roman-Gothic architecture, which is seen at the sharp bows. St. Anthony's Church was built in 14-15 centuries. It was restored in 2003-2005.
